Carlos Puig began his studies in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Buenos Aires, but his education did not stop there. He learned to paint and draw from Carlos Gorriarena, and participated in workshops at La Asociación Estímulo de Bellas Artes and the Ceramic Instituto. At age eighteen, Puig traveled to New York City. It was a transformative experience. “The magic of this city impacted my view of life, and therefore my work,” he says.
Painting mainly with acrylics and enamel, Puig rotates between canvas, paper, wood, and cardboard, identifying his pieces by number. His paintings are filled with aggressive colors punctuated by thick black lines that snake and tear their way forward like saw teeth. Each piece is raw, a color-strewn wound that Puig harnesses to reveal hidden realities. He likes to be alone with his work, moving toward the final brushstroke, sustaining himself with each flick of the wrist. “I paint to be alive,” Puig says. “I paint not to die of reality.”
